Why don't we cover the desert with Solar panels?

Hi guys, today I watched a TED video "Why don't we cover the desert with solar panels? ". Many of countries adapt the Solar panels which produces Solar energy. Solar panels can only interact with the certain wavelength light  and solar panels have limit to store energy as well as limit to produce energy/power. Solar panels don't have the capacity to absorb more heat so that we have install cooling systems. It may change the ecosystem in the desert. Presently we can only supply power to local places/cities. We can't produce power to long distances.
